PETER JAMES ON HOW TO THRILL… REALISTICALLY

Copy: The National 25/10/11

>>I’ll be honest, airport thrillers are not the books I usually turn to. But I’d heard lots of good reports about Peter James, and in the week when there was so much controversy about a thriller-writing chair of the Booker, it seemed a good time to speak to him. First of all, of course, I had to read his latest books – and I did really enjoy them. Perfect People combines a little bit of sci-fi, a little bit of genetics and a lot of crime thriller; it feels realistic and only really jumps the shark towards the end when his characters suddenly find themselves transported from a nice Sussex barn… to a secret island base. Still, if you’re in an airport, you’ll love this.

“As a writer I don’t want to write books that are just chewing gum for people’s eyes. When you read a book, you want to be gripped but also learn something new about the world, have your eyes opened to an issue you hadn’t really considered before”
