A deliciously acerbic twist on the rom-com, Cult Classic finds New York magazine editor Lola engaged… but doubtful that really wants to be with someone who is so dutifully passive and well-adjusted. As she processes all these big, meaning of life questions about compulsion and commitment, it just so happens that she keeps bumping into much more exciting exes.
Why this is occurring with weird regularity is, admittedly, a huge plot contrivance; her former boss is now the leader of a hipster cult using collective power to change how Lola sees the world and possibly teach her life lessons.
But Crosley’s eye for crackling dialogue – surely this will be optioned for television – makes this both a hugely enjoyable satire of thirtysomething life (and dating) in the city, and a really perceptive take on regret, memory and the paralysing fear of Big Decisions.
