BEASTIE BOYS FOR HALL OF FAME

The Booker eh? So yesterday. The next ridiculous prize to get het up about is the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall Of Fame. Still, like Julian Barnes’ Booker win, there’s actually an act on the shortlist who have been nominated multiple times before but never won: The Beastie Boys. For me, right from Shake Your Rump on Paul’s Boutique in 1989

to their most recent record, Hot Sauce Committee Part II, complete with the brilliant Make Some Noise

they’ve continually entertained, evolved and even, whisper it, educated. They’ve clearly got a great name, too. Anyway, I wrote about the strange mix of acts that make up the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame shortlist for The National this week. Beastie Boys are up against power balladeers Heart, The Cure, and Guns N’Roses, amongst many more. Now that would be an odd megamix.

“If this list encourages just one person to return to the youthful brilliance of the Beastie Boys’ second album Paul’s Boutique, or the exuberant, mysterious goth pop of The Cure’s Lovecats, it will in a way have done part of its job.”
