I saw a boxset review of The Lakes recently – the 1990s Jimmy McGovern drama set in The Lake District. Anyway, it announced John Simm as a major acting talent, which reminded me that I saw him play Hamlet at The Crucible in Sheffield not so long ago.
“If any comparisons with Simm’s television work must be made, his Hamlet is probably closest to his breakthrough role in Jimmy McGovern’s 1997 series The Lakes, a petulant but endearing rogue blessed with sharp wit and intelligence – but dealt the cruellest of hands.
