All hail the iconic black cab

Copy: Monocle December edition

>> When I started out as a videogame journalist back in the late 1990s, I probably wouldn’t have predicted that 13 years later I would be travelling to the factory which makes the iconic black cab. In Coventry. But this was where Tyler Brûlé’s magazine Monocle – “A briefing on global affairs, business, culture and design” – sent me last month. And it was fascinating seeing The London Taxi Company in operation – a firm which has had a bumpy ride thanks to the downturn but is now enjoying truly global reach. Citizens of cities such as Baku in Azerbaijan and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia are getting more and more used to the sight of black cabs on their streets as the taxi operators realise this very special car’s capabilities (and endurability).

You have to be a subscriber to see the Monocle articles online, but if you click on the link below you can open the pdf.
