IS FILM DEAD? OR JUST DYING?

Copy: The National, 07/11/11

>> No, not films. Film. The ever-increasing use of digital (take Gareth Edwards brilliant Monsters from last year, entirely shot using a digital camera) means the likes of Panavision aren’t even making film cameras at present. Meanwhile, Tacita Dean’s installation at Tate Britain’s Turbine Hall (aptly called, er, Film) is basically a homage to celluloid. So it seemed like the right time to speak to Panavision, as well as film-makers themselves, to see whether film was indeed dying – and if it is, what difference that might make to the movies we watch.

“Essentially, choosing between analogue and digital is like an artist deciding whether to paint something in oil or watercolour. Each movie director has a very specific look they’re trying to achieve.”
